The Ascential Dance program strives to offer progressive artistic education. At our school, traditional and contemporary syllabi are combined to form a complete “living” dance curriculum.
As students become further skilled at combining movement and sound, they will study and utilize dance terminology, history, anthropology, anatomy and spatial perception as tools to compliment their learning.
An “ascential” portion of their education will include discussion, community outreach and special projects which aim to generate forward-thinking artistic individuals who enjoy and admire dance.

CHILDREN'S CLASSES (click here for full schedule)
Ballet classes will focus on vocabulary, coordination, strength, flexibility, technique and fluidity. Students will learn typical “barre” exercises and transition into “centre” work and traveling sequences. Beginner classes learn basic placement and balance and will later be introduced to turns and jumps.
JAM classes (for ages 7 & older). JAM (Jazz, Afro, Modern) classes present the Afro-fusion technique as developed by Ascential Dance Theater Colorado Founder, Jennifer Fagan Archer. African influenced movement and contemporary dance styles are blended together with a focus on the isolation of body parts, rhythm and poly-rhythms, turns and shifting weight. In addition to the technical skills developed in this class, the students will be exposed to international music and culture. Jazz, Hip-hop, African and Modern techniques will be taught simultaneously.
The 4-6 year olds are offered Combination (Combo) classes of either Ballet and JAM or Stomp and JAM dances. The Ballet portion will focus on strength, technique and fluidity while the JAM portion will simply be an introduction to the JAM syllabus with emphasis on imagination through the use of themes, props and storytelling.
Introducing the notion of “musical feet” to students, Stomp classes are a favorite among young dancers. While developing rhythm, balance and coordination students further explore the integrity of sound by learning the personality and depth of syncopation. Musical instruments and props will be used to compliment this course.
Modern courses infuse the traditional styles as introduced by Katherine Dunham, Martha Graham, Lester Horton, and Jose Limon, to name a few. Dancers will learn vocabulary, study people, invent new shapes, engage in choreographic projects, solve artistic problems and explore emotions through movement.
Boys’ classes combine the Stomp and JAM syllabi with special emphasis on imagination through the use of themes, props and storytelling.
Teaching assistantships. Students ages 10 and older are eligible for assistantships with the school. Assistants will be placed in a class according to their interests, strengths and level of training. Interested applicants should check with their teacher about this scholarship position.
